PACIFIC NORTHWEST PARALEGAL ASSOCIATION

Who Are We?
Pacific Northwest Paralegal Association ("PNPA") is an association of paralegals, who through education, knowledge and experience perform substantive work under the direction of attorneys. PNPA members know that through proper utilization of paralegals, the client receives quality cost effective legal representation. PNPA members have an educational requirement to maintain membership in the association, so they are inspired to continue their legal education, take classes, teach classes and seminars, and improve their skills.

PNPA is an affiliate association of the National Association of Legal Assistants ("NALA").

In 1976 NALA created a two day certification exam for the purpose of distinguishing legal assistants/paralegals from legal secretaries and also to provide paralegals with a certificate and title that signifies quality and excellence.

The examination was created by attorneys, judges and paralegals throughout the United States. The exam is proctored by a certified paralegal, is offered in every state in the United States, and is graded by the National Certifying Board twice a year. The examination is a comprehensive two day assessment that tests the knowledge of the paralegal in areas such as contracts, legal research, real estate, bankruptcy, probate, civil litigation, family law, business organizations/corporations, ethics, estate planning, criminal law, administrative law, human relations, communications, analytical ability and judgment, and interviewing techniques.

Most of PNPA's members are Certified Paralegals ("CP") also known as Certified Legal Assistants ("CLA").
